Penn Garage Doors: springs, openers, tracks and new doors in Penn, Westmoreland County, PA.
The cables and tracks are the parts of a garage door you probably never think about until one of them fails. Then the door hangs crooked, binds partway up or sits with a roller sticking out of its rail. Here is what is going on and how we put it right.
How the system works
Two steel cables run from the bottom corners of the door up to drums on the spring shaft. As the spring unwinds, the drums turn and the cables lift the door evenly on both sides. Rollers on the edges of the door ride inside the tracks, which guide the door up and back along the ceiling. If either cable slips or the rollers leave the track, the door goes out of line.
Causes we see in the township
Road salt is a major one. It collects on the garage floor and rusts the bottom brackets where the cables attach. Rusted cable ends fray and eventually snap. A door that closes against an uneven floor on a sloped lot can also slacken one cable more than the other, and a slack cable can jump off its drum. Then there are bumps from cars and mowers, which bend the lower track, and worn rollers that stop turning and start to drag.
Signs to watch for
Frayed wires near the bottom corners of the door, a gap at one side of the bottom seal, a scraping noise as the door moves, or a roller that wobbles in the track are all early warnings. Calling at that stage is far cheaper than waiting for the door to come out of the track.
The fix
The technician takes tension off the door safely, then sets it back in the tracks. Bent track sections are straightened or replaced, rusted cables are swapped for new galvanized ones, and both cables are wound evenly so the door rises level. Worn rollers are replaced, often with quieter nylon ones. We finish by testing the balance and the opener's safety reverse.
